Does Normal Health or Travel Insurance Cover Dental Treatment Abroad?

Private or public health insurance

Domestic health plans are generally designed around care in your home system or approved networks. US plans, Canadian provincial cover, Medicare Australia, the UK NHS and Irish public arrangements should not be assumed to fund elective foreign dental treatment.

Standard travel insurance

Travel insurance commonly covers unexpected illness, injury, cancellation, baggage and emergency evacuation under its terms. Many policies exclude trips taken for planned treatment and complications arising from elective procedures.

Emergency dental cover is different

A policy may pay a limited amount to relieve sudden dental pain or injury during an ordinary holiday while excluding crowns, implants, veneers, routine care and treatment you travelled to receive.

GHIC, EHIC and reciprocal arrangements

These arrangements are not substitutes for specialist insurance and generally do not fund deliberately planned private dental tourism. Eligibility, destination and medically necessary public care rules vary.

Questions to send your existing insurer

• Does travelling primarily for planned dental treatment invalidate the policy?
• Are unrelated accidents and illnesses still covered?
• Are complications arising from the dental procedure excluded?
• Would evacuation or extra accommodation be covered?
• Is written pre-authorisation required?

Get the answer in writing

Describe the exact procedure, country, clinic, dates and existing conditions. Save the policy wording and insurer response. A clinic cannot confirm what your insurer will pay.
