Questions to Ask a Dentist Abroad Before Paying a Deposit
Take this practical question list to an overseas dental consultation before committing to veneers, crowns, implants or another treatment.
A good consultation should help you understand your oral health and choices. It should not feel like a sales call built around a flight date. Use the following questions before paying a deposit for treatment abroad.
Diagnosis and alternatives
- What is the diagnosis for each tooth?
- Which problems require treatment and which are cosmetic preferences?
- What happens if I do nothing for now?
- Are whitening, orthodontics, bonding or a smaller restoration reasonable alternatives?
- Can I obtain the examination findings and proposed plan in writing?
The treating professionals
- Who will perform each stage?
- What is each clinician’s registration number and regulator?
- Who provides cover if that clinician is unavailable?
- Which laboratory makes the restorations?
The procedure
- Is each restoration a veneer, crown, bridge or implant component?
- How much natural tooth will be removed?
- What anaesthetic or sedation is proposed?
- What materials and implant systems will be used?
- Will I receive temporary teeth?
- How will the bite, colour and fit be approved before final cementation?
Timing and travel
- How many appointments and separate journeys are normally required?
- What could delay the schedule?
- How long should I remain near the clinic after the last appointment?
- Is it safe to fly at the planned time?
Price and payment
- What exactly is included?
- Which findings could increase the price?
- In what currency will I pay, and are card fees or taxes added?
- What is refundable if the plan changes or I decide not to proceed?
Risks, aftercare and complaints
- What are the important risks and likely recovery symptoms?
- Who can I contact outside clinic hours?
- What happens if I have a problem after returning home?
- Does the warranty cover treatment only, or also travel and accommodation?
- What maintenance is required to keep the warranty valid?
- Which law and complaints process apply?
Records
Ask whether you will receive copies of your scans, X-rays, photographs, consent forms, treatment notes, prescriptions, invoices and implant or material details.
You do not need to ask every question in exactly these words. The important test is whether the answers are clear, specific and documented. If the clinic avoids reasonable questions or pressures you to commit, pause before making an irreversible decision.
