Root Canal Treatment Abroad: What Happens and How Many Visits Might You Need?

Root canal treatment treats infection or inflammation inside a tooth. The dentist removes the affected tissue from the root canal system, cleans and shapes the canals, then fills and seals them. Without appropriate treatment, an infected tooth may eventually need extraction.

Why might root canal treatment be needed?

Deep decay, cracks, trauma or previous extensive dental work can damage the pulp inside a tooth. Symptoms can include pain, sensitivity, swelling or tenderness, although some affected teeth cause few symptoms. Diagnosis may require examination and X-rays.

How many appointments are needed?

Some cases can be completed in one visit; others need multiple appointments, medication inside the tooth or review before the final restoration. Complex anatomy and retreatment can require an endodontist. A travel plan should allow for changes rather than assuming every tooth will be finished immediately.

Will the tooth need a crown?

Many root-filled back teeth need substantial protection because they are already weakened, but the restoration depends on how much healthy tooth remains and how the tooth functions. Ask whether the quoted price includes the permanent filling, build-up and crown.

Does it hurt?

Local anaesthetic is normally used. Some tenderness after treatment can occur. Increasing swelling, fever, severe pain or difficulty swallowing needs urgent professional assessment.

Records and aftercare

Request copies of X-rays, the treatment record and details of materials used. Ask who will review the tooth and what happens if symptoms return after you go home. A low price is less useful if a separate journey is required to complete or retreat the tooth.
