Fillings, Inlays and Onlays Abroad: Is Travelling for General Dental Work Worth It?

Is a trip worthwhile for routine restorations?

Fillings, inlays and onlays can be less expensive abroad, but travelling solely for a small amount of routine dental work may not save money after flights, accommodation and follow-up are included. They make more sense to compare when they form part of a broader, clinically necessary plan.

What is the difference?

A direct filling is placed and shaped in the mouth, commonly using composite resin or amalgam where available and appropriate. Inlays and onlays are made outside the mouthโ€”by a laboratory or digital milling workflowโ€”and bonded into or onto the tooth. An onlay covers one or more cusps and may help restore a more extensively damaged tooth.

When might travel be poor value?

For one or two straightforward fillings, travel costs and the difficulty of arranging a quick adjustment can exceed the treatment saving. Suspected deep decay may also become a larger procedure after examination. Compare the complete trip cost with a written local estimate before booking.

Avoid unnecessary replacement

An existing filling should not be replaced solely because it looks old. The dentist should explain evidence of decay, fracture, leakage or another clinical reason. Repeated replacement can remove additional tooth tissue.

Restoration Made Typical use
Direct filling In the mouth Small to moderate cavities
Inlay Laboratory or digital workflow Restoration within cusps
Onlay Laboratory or digital workflow Covers weakened cusp or cusps
Crown Laboratory or digital workflow More extensive coverage

Questions to ask before agreeing to treatment

  • Why does each restoration need replacing?
  • How close is the decay to the nerve?
  • What material is proposed and why?
  • Could the tooth require root-canal treatment?
  • Is an adjustment visit included?
  • Does travelling still save money after all trip costs?

Which procedures are you considering?
Important: This is a general planning aid, not personalised medical clearance. Your dentist or surgeon must set your travel timetable after examining you. Complications, infection, sedation, multiple procedures and existing health conditions can require a longer stay. Seek urgent professional help for heavy bleeding, breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, fever or severe uncontrolled pain.
