Dentures Abroad: Full, Partial and Implant-Retained Options Explained
Understand full and partial dentures, implant-retained options, adjustment periods, cleaning and the questions to ask before having dentures made abroad.
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. A full denture replaces all teeth in an arch, while a partial denture replaces selected teeth and uses the remaining teeth for support. Some dentures can be stabilised by dental implants.
What materials are used?
Dentures may have an acrylic base, a metal framework or a combination. The best design depends on the remaining teeth, gums, bite, available space and ability to clean the appliance. Ask what material is included rather than comparing price alone.
What are immediate dentures?
Immediate dentures can be fitted soon after teeth are removed so the patient is not left without teeth. The mouth changes during healing, so adjustments, relining or replacement may be needed. If you are travelling, find out who will provide these reviews.
Are implant-retained dentures fixed?
Not necessarily. Many clip onto implants but are still removed for cleaning. Other full-arch restorations are fixed by a dentist. Ask whether the proposed teeth are removable, who removes them for maintenance and what components may need replacement.
How long does adjustment take?
Speech, eating and sore spots can take time to settle. A denture should be reviewed rather than tolerated if it causes ulcers or persistent pain. Dentures also require cleaning and are commonly left out overnight to protect the tissues beneath them.

Allow enough time for trial stages, bite checks and adjustments. Obtain written details of the design, materials and implant attachments. A package that ends immediately after fitting may not include the follow-up most new dentures require.
