Anaesthetic versus sedation
Local anaesthetic numbs the treatment area. Sedation reduces awareness or anxiety but does not necessarily remove pain, so local anaesthetic is commonly used as well.

Medical screening matters
Provide an accurate medication list, allergies, medical conditions, previous anaesthetic problems and information about pregnancy, sleep apnoea, alcohol or drug use. Never hide information to remain eligible for a package.
Who should provide and monitor sedation?
Ask for the clinician’s name, qualification, emergency training, monitoring equipment and facility arrangements. Confirm who focuses exclusively on sedation during complex care and how emergencies are transferred to hospital.
